June NewFO - Hocuspocusville

I am absolutely loving this month's project!

I don't think I've ever started an embroidery project this massive. When I got the pattern for my birthday and ordered the fabric, I didn't really think I'd be finishing it any time soon. But now that I've got it started, I want to make this entire quilt, and I fully intend to keep going until I've got it done.

I'm actually feeling that way about most of my NewFO projects. The spiral log cabin still has me a little puzzled, but the others are going great.

April NewFO

I didn't expect to have a NewFO for this month, but here it is --

The idea I had in my head of how a tumbler quilt is laid out doesn't match any of the tumbler quilts I just looked at on Pinterest. I'll lay the rows out the right way the next time I take a picture of this project. Which may be soon since I've cut what I hope is enough tumblers for the throw I want to make and I can't wait to see how it all comes together.

I'm on a cutting kick this week. In addition to the tumblers, I've cut enough drab squares to replace the ones I stole from that project for my Quilt Block Quilt Along Squares. And there's a bin of bright scraps for another project sitting right next to my Go! cutter, waiting for me to work on them later today.

March NewFO

Last Monday, I had one single block of my NewFO to show you. It didn't look like much of anything. Since then, I've been making more blocks -- almost a third of what I'll need for the quilt.

How's this?

I can't decide if I love it or not. I like it, but it's not quite the quilt I had in my head when I decided to make something like the brown Irish Chain, but really scrappy, and with different color placement.

I am having a lot of fun piecing the blocks, so I'll keep plugging away and figure out what to do with the finished quilt once it's done.

this one is mine

I'm starting something new, and this one is just for me. After I made the first drab lap quilt, I tried a second one to see how it would look without the muslin.

I liked the first one a lot. I loved the second one. I wanted it to be big enough to wrap up in. Three months later, I'm finally cutting squares of every drab fabric I used in the first two, and every drab fabric I can find in my stash that I left out of the first two.

One of my fears with these controlled scrap quilts is that I'll find the absolute perfect fabric lurking in my stash right after I've finished the quilt. The original goal of this quilt was to use up some ugly fabrics that play nicely together, but that's not going to happen. It turns out that I've got a whole lot of fabrics that match this color scheme and I'm not using more than one, maybe two, WOF strips of each print.

January NewFO

Except for a couple of baby quilts and the square for Jo's Quilt Square Quilt Along, I've been sticking to my UFOs this month. I got the top for Quinn's green Trip Around the World together, got most of the blocks for my Extra Scrappy Pinwheels together, and finally started quilting my Double Irish Chain.

So why am I doing the NewFo Challenge when I've already got projects to work on? Because I've also got projects that I really want to make, but never quite get around to starting.

I thought I knew what my January NewFO was going to be, at least until I sat down and really read the directions Monday afternoon. The block wasn't assembled the way I thought it was. The directions were very text-heavy and scattered through the book and I just didn't have the patience to sit down and read through pages and pages, let alone re cut the strips I'd hoped to use.

So I went back to my original list and decided to try a spiral log cabin block. I already had the box of 1 1/2" strip out for my Quilt Square Quilt Along square. Sometimes having the fabric right there in front of my is my biggest reason for picking a particular project.

I'd been putting this one off because it looked hard. She says right there in the instructions that you've got to be thinking when you do this. But once you get going, it makes perfect sense where the strips should go.

I'm still not quite sure where the final strip goes, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

NewFOs!!

NewFO2012

I really love this idea -- picking a dozen new projects to start in the new year and actually starting them. There are soooo many quilts I want to make. I've got stacks of magazines bristling with bookmarks...and more saved on my computer from websites and blogs...and more that are just dancing around in my head... And I know I'm never going to start them all, let alone finish them all.

And it Does Not Matter. I don't have to make every quilt I've ever fallen in love with. Unless I've bought an expensive pattern and fabric that can't be used for anything else, I'm not committed.

My NewFOs for 2012

Swoon
Spiral Log Cabin
Pineapple Quilt
Calendula Patterdrip's Cottage
applique ladies
Scrappy Kaleidoscope
Rob Peter to Pay Paul
big drab postage stamp quilt
lego quilt
wedged circles
big version of scrappy hearts
jack in the box
Kiss in the corner

These are just off the top of my head, so I'm sure I'll be modifying the list before long.

What quilts have you been wanting to start?
