Meet Johnny!

As the thrift store scrap bags get more and more picked over, I've been telling myself that I could work my way through Bonnie Hunter's books, make a zillion fun little quilts, and probably not make much of a dent.

Green fabric, I've got. I used a bunch of it  for Quinn's Trip Around the World, but there's still plenty left. Not that I'm trying to use it up. I like green fabric. Red, I've got. I'm hoarding every shade I can find in my stash for a couple of different projects, but I made myself part with just enough for this quilt.

The pattern is Criss Cross Applesauce, from Scraps & Shirttails II.(The book is obscenely overpriced on Amazon right now, but Bonnie is still selling it.)  I wasn't sure at first if I was making a baby quilt or a big person quilt, but after twenty-five blocks I decided that I was done. It's a fun pattern and I may try it again in different colors, but for now this is good.

While I was working on the quilt, Hubby decided that our youngest two kids might not know the story of Johnny Appleseed, so we found and watched the Disney version on youtube (voiced by Dennis Day from the old Jack Benny radio show), and got into a debate about whether it was Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill who rode a tornado. When did they become "fakelore" instead of tall tales?

Such a pretty quilt - love the pops of red throughout. I'm very fond of greens and you have used these wonderfully. I've never heard the word Fakelore before. Well, they are always coming up with new words, aren't they? And I thought it was Paul Bunyan - am I wrong?

Michelle - for some reason your comment on my blog did not go to my email box. So I'll answer you here - yes the bookmarks are taken from boxes. She used any box that was light weight - cereal - toys anything she thought had a cute picture.

What a beautiful quilt! The different tones of red really keep my eye moving around the quilt - well done!! :)

Not only are your colors beautiful, the photography against the green grass is wonderful. I love the red green contrast. I sometimes shy away from that combination, since it can look a bit too much like Christmas, but here the colors complement each other so well. Congratulations on a truly lovely quilt.

I really like Green too Michelle and love your Criss Cross Applesauce baby quilt! My niece wanted a baby quilt in green and brown. My nephew wanted grey and purple. For every color scheme, there is a nursery somewhere just waiting for it's quilt.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful criss cross apple sauce quilt. As has been said, the combination of reds and greens doesn't shout Christmas they just look lively together!

Love the quilt. It was Pecos Bill who rode a tornado. Paul Bunyan stuck with Babe the blue ox and cutting down trees.
