Nancy's Mysterious Quilt

I've been absolutely dying to show you this quilt! The pattern is a free download from the Moda Bake Shop. You'll find my Nancy Drew giveaway at the bottom of this post.

I grew up on Nancy Drew books, always wishing I could find a secret passageway or an old diary...something spooky and mysterious. But there's not a lot of spooky and mysterious to be found when you live in a newly built house.

These days, I've got an old barn and and old attic, and a whole collection of antique trunks. But not many mysteries, unless I'm trying to figure out which of the kids did what.

When I first saw the previews for Moda's Get a Clue With Nancy Drew fabric, I got giddy. Those book covers...and the spines...and the end papers...  I knew I wanted to make a quilt with it!

And while I was waiting for the fabric to arrive, and then for the chance to show you the finished project, I tried to piece a black widow spider and made a cover for my 1930s and 40s era Nancy Drew books which also fits a Kindle. There's a tutorial for that here.

And now I'm working on another project for the Nancy Drew blog hop in January... I think I need to buy more of this fabric.  Signups for the blog hop are still open -- head over to Carol's blog for the details.

Is it conjuring up as many happy memories for you as it is for me?  I've been having an absolute blast, re-reading a bunch of Nancy Drew books and discovering some series from the same era that I missed when I was a kid -- Cherry Ames and Vicki Barr and Judy Bolton and the Dana Girls...

Did you love the Nancy Drew books as much as I did?  Does this fabric make you feel like re-reading them? I've managed to find copies of four of the six titles featured on the quilt top to give away. According to The Nancy Drew Library, these are vintage Twin Thriller book club editions. Each book contains two complete Nancy Drew mysteries, the same text as appeared in the yellow cover books on the quilt.

One of my followers will receive both books - to enter, just be a follower of my blog and leave a comment on this post before 11:59pm December 10.

Come back tomorrow and I'll tell you where I found the moss covered mansion (which is actually part of an asylum) to take the pictures!

  5. I always follow your blog. It is so much fun and you always have something to giveway or a new quilt pattern to make. I would be honored to have the opportunity to win Nancy Drew's books. I grew up with her books and I am thinking that maybe my mom might have kept a book or two. Then again, maybe not. I can't wait to start making Nancy's Mysterious Quilt. I love secrets and look forward to the month of January. Thank you for all that you do for all of your followers.

  6. Cute - I love 9 patches! I read every Nancy Drew book that I could get my hands on, a few Dana Girls, and some Hardy Boys (oh Shaun Cassidy..). Eventually my books ended up being boxed and put in my mom's garage. If I cold get to them, I'm afraid of what I'd find from years of mouse exposure - sigh. DH saved about a dozen of his Hardy Boys so I'm hoping to get our son started on them when he's a couple years older. I'm going to have to search out this fabric and make something.

Wow, I LOVED the Nancy Drew books - read every one of them and all of the Hardy Boys mysteries, also. Nice to know there are others out there who still appreciate "real" adventure! Your quilt is beautiful and fun!

  8. I was giddy to see your post on Moda. I was an avid Nancy Drew reader as a girl. I read them so fast and so furiously that my mother tried to limit me by dictating that I read X number of books between each one. I am off to see about the fabric line now. Thanks for conjuring up a desire to go back to number one. No housework may get done today. I may have to curl up on the couch with Nancy.

  11. Another Nancy Drew fan here although my first love was Trixie Beldon. :) Am I allowed to admit that here? I saved both collections for when we had kids and our daughter devoured them as well. Now she is in college and I still can't get rid of them. Super cute quilt!

  24. I always wanted to be Nancy Drew or Trixie Belden but there's just been no mysteries in my life! So, sad to say, I'm not a sleuth with a coupe.

  27. I'm a follower. I babysat when I was young just so I could buy the Nancy Drew books. It was agony waiting for them to be published. I had a complete vintage collection. MyMom decided to clean house and threw them all out. I was devastated. It broke my heart. Life moves on but I've always wished I had them to reread. I loved those books. I'd be thrilled to win one. Every time I see one in the antique malls, they want a small fortune for a book.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  32. Nancy Drew was one of my favorites growing up too. In fact, when asked what kind of books I love, I answer "adult Nancy Drews!!!" Like Sue Grafton; Dana Stabinow and well ... you know what I mean!

Thanks for the chance at the drawing.

I am an email follower, who found your blog during Ebony Love's book reviews. I didn't read as a child anything other than what was required because I couldn't be still long enough. I'm going to blame that on the broken vertebrae at the bottom of my spine that was finally replaired in 2008 at the age of 45. I desperately want to quilt, I just don't have time with my bird hobby and babysitting my 1st grandbaby. But I've got a hand full of quilt books, love paper piecing, and I'm collecting dies. My paternal grandma quilted all the years I was growing up and we always had the comfort of her quilts. She made me a special double wedding ring quilt for graduation of HS, which I cherish.

  35. WOW WOW WOW - love it Michelle! I adored Nancy as a kid, every Christmas mum would get me several books and I'd have them read in three days. I would re-read them all year, until the next Christmas. I'm going to HAVE to get some of this fabric!!!!!!!

I did find some Nancy Drew's at our local thrift shop, I look there every time I go, I'd love to have the whole collection again. I do still read them. I also loved Cherry Ames, don't think I ever read Vicki Barr or Judy Bolton though!

  48. I'm so happy I stopped over. I also was an avid reader in my younger years....and became a librarian in my older years. I wish I knew how many books I read as a child, including Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and the Elizabeth Enbright series. This fabric will be so much fun to play with. Aren't the fabric companies smart for tapping into our love of books to sell us fabric? They know too well what makes us tick. Most of us don't really have a chance!
