1000th post giveaway -- things that make my heart go pitty-pat
To celebrate my 1000th post, which was actually this week's stash report, I'm giving away a stack of books that make my heart go pitty-pat. I'm not giving away my own favorite books because there are still things in them I need to make, but I've managed to find gently used copies to share with one lucky reader.
This one has got to be my favorite quilting book. I found my copy of Family Ties: Old Quilt Patterns from New Cloth (Needlework and Quilting) four years ago. Talula Gilbert Bottoms, the author's grandmother, made more than 200 quilts between 1870s and 1945. It's been quite a while since I read it cover to cover, but if I'm remembering right she pieced and quilted them by hand. The patterns here include Double Wedding Ring and Improved Nine Patch and Sunbonnet Sue and all of the traditional old patterns that come to mind when I think quilt. And many that I'd never seen before I got my hands on this book.
I want to be like Talula when I grow up. If I can use my sewing machine.
This one has the pattern for Shenandoah Log Cabin in it. If you don't know what that one is, there are plenty of pictures on Judy Martin's Website. Imagine a log cabin that swirls like a Snails Trail.
I really want to make a pineapple quilt. I really don't want to do paper piecing. This one uses strips and is, according to the introduction, similar to the Quilt in a Day Log Cabin pattern. If I could talk a friend through that one over the phone, I should be able to do this.
Although I don't actually do it as much as I'd like to, I love knitting socks. I knit three pairs (and a whole long list of other things) during the 22 days I was on hospital bed rest with my youngest. Solid colors and intricate textures...sigh I really should make more sock knitting time.
I wanted to include a cross stitch kit, or maybe one of the Diane Phalen patterns that helped lure me from cross stitching to quilting, but the stores that used to have aisles of kits and patterns have done away with them. I did find these patterns, which are exactly what would have had me bouncing with joy when I was in the deepest part of my obsession and my definition of the best cross stitch charts was "huge and completely covered with stitches."
Want to win this whole wonderful stack of books? Just be a follower of my blog and leave a comment on this post before 11:59pm 02/06/2012. I'd love to know what would be in your stack of books that make your heart go pitty-pat. (And please make sure you're not a no-reply blogger -- Sew Cal Gal has a great explanation of exactly what that means and how to make sure it's not keeping you from winning the contests you enter.)
Congratulations on 1000 posts! This is a very generous give-away to celebrate, and lots of fun. I'm glad I'm first, because I don't want to be picked. I just wanted to say hello!!~karen

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the 1000th post! Great accomplishment! I love the idea behind the Family Ties book - I too love the traditional patterns, but am in love with modern fabric! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteThat Family Ties book sounds like a spectacular read. I recently found one called "Love Of Quilts" which is a collection of vintage literature (1845-1940) featuring quilts and quilting. My most recent addition is not a quilting book, but a textbook called "Sewing for the Apparel Industry" which teaches professional finishing techniques for clothing construction. I will do anything related to my sewing machine and although quilting is my favorite art form, I also love to see my hand made creations worn by my daughters.
ReplyDeleteI've been a follower of yours for a while....might be something to do with your name....might be because you just have an awesome blog!
Wow, congrats on your posting milestone! The books look great, and I have a place in my heart for cross stitch too. I still have an ongoing birth announcement, the little girl will have graduated before it's finished! Thanks for a great giveaway.

ReplyDeleteCongrats on 100 posts! I enjoy reading them. I love books, and knitting socks as much as I love quilting. I am not sure which books I would put in a giveaway but for sure Bonnie Hunter's would be among them!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to read your posts. The books look lovely; as a traditional quilters gently easing her way into the modern genre, I have been lusting after Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr's new Transparency book. I'm a quilt book junkie, a fairly new blogger, and just in love with the new community of young quilters online.
ReplyDeleteCONGRATs on #1000. If you lived closer I'd take you out for lunch or at least do the happy dance with you!! I know we had talked before about your favorite goodies...it's fun to see them.
ReplyDeleteWOW - 1000 posts. Congrads on such a wonderful site. I look forward to reading your post and am quite a follower of yours indeed. To win such a giveway of treasured books is quite the quilting treasure. I love learning and I know there is so much to learn. Thank you for a chance to win.

ReplyDeleteI'd have a hard time choosing favorite books because I tend to borrow them from the library unless I find them at thrift stores.
However, your sock book caught my eye since I've been working on socks for charity lately. I have a library copy of "2-at-a-Time Socks" sitting here, waiting for my 40" circular needle to arrive in the mail.
Congrats on your 1000th! I would love to win your pack of books...I especially would love to see the one with the old patterns.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 1000th post. That's a huge accomplishment.
What a great group of books you are giving away.
The book of that group which I'm most interested in is the Family Ties book. That looks like a great one to own.
Congratulations. Wow 1000 posts. Thanks for the chance to win. the books that make my heart jump right now are by Bonnie Humter and Eleanor Burns.
ReplyDeleteWow, congrats on all those posts. I am already a follower. I am a romantic traditionalist, I guess, so I like vintage patterns with soft florals. I buy lots of books and my hb thinks I am nuts as "no one would live long enough to make all those quilts." Sometimes I just like to look and dream.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower. 1000 posts - WOW. I have way too many books already but, there is always a new one by Eleanor burns that comes out pretty soon and Jennifer Chiverini is working on a couple new books too. I'm hoping to get a few from Alex Anderson next month.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! 1,000 posts is pretty amazing. I am barely 1/10 of the way. Cookies and Quilts has been on my radar for a long time, but I have never managed to pick up a copy. One of my current favorites is "Two from One Jelly Roll Quilts," by Pam and Nicky Lintott. I haven't made any of the quilts yet, but I have lovingly pawed the pages trying to decide which one I should make first. I have also been eyeing the pages of Nine by Nine by Cyndi Hershey. There are a few quilts in that book that I would like to try.
ReplyDeleteThanks for offering the opportunity to win such great books.
Congratulations on 1,000 posts. I am a follower and the Family ties book is one from our guilds library which I loved when I came across it a few years ago. Still trying to get an knit my own socks... too many projects not enough time.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1000 posts! I've "followed" for a while, but became official today! Here's to a few thousand more!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1000th post. I t
ReplyDeleteReally enjoy and appreciate your blog. When you quilts with a lot of "white" do you use the same white in one quilt or do you mix fabrics. I can tell in your red 9 patch and snowball you have many red squares but I can't tell about the white. Thanks. Suzanne. Sneuhaus@hot.rr.com
1000 posts is an awesome accomplishment. I only wish I had discovered you sooner. Good luck on the next 1000!
ReplyDeleteMy heart goes pitty pat at books with scrap quilts. I also have a thing about wanting to knit some socks. I have even purchased the yarn, but haven't taken the plunge to try it yet.
Congrats on the 1000th posting! I love anybooks that discuss pictoral quilts as they tell stories of days gone by.. And m y Dear Jane quilt book.
ReplyDeleteWoo Hoo, congrats on your 1000th posting on your blog!! That's a great achievement!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE books about birds in any form - painting them, quilting them, drawing them, etc. So anything to do with birds would be my fav kinds of books.
What an accomplishment - 1,000 posts. Congrats. It's very nice of you to offer such good giveaways. My book shelf would be more complete if I had a Bonnie Hunter book, since I want to use more of my stash for scrap quilts. Anything to do with quilts and quilting makes my heart go pitty pat.
ReplyDeleteI have the first Talula Gilbert Bottoms and her Quilts book - didn't know there was a sequel - how fun! Would love to see that book. Thanks for the opportunity to read your blog and enter this giveaway.
