Finding the Space to Pin Baste Big Quilts

I love quilting on my Janome, but I have a heck of a time finding space to pin baste large quilts. Our house is small and has furniture in it The nail polish quilt will take every inch of my floor space and then some.

When we moved our travel trailer home I started to wonder if that hard surface under the mattress would be big enough to lay out the nail polish quilt on.

This could work! I wound up with the mattress tipped up against the door, but basting in the trailer would mean that I didn't have to chase all of the kids out of the room before starting and that I could leave a big project partially finished until the next day.

This quilt still needs two sides of the border put on, so it'll be a while before I can test my theory and be sure this really works. I'll let you know what happens.

Where do you pin baste?

  1. Oh, I have that same problem. Just yesterday I started basting on my hands and knees and banished everyone from the basement family room. The quilt was still to wide so I had fold a portion of one side and do the center and other side first. If my quilts are less than 72" wide, I use my 6' folding table and boards or pipe insulation and Sharon Scrambler's YouTube video.
    Good luck!!

  5. What a fun quilt! I use two 6'foot tables pushed together. I can actually fit both in my small sewing room but I have to stand on the fireplace hearth on one side! Or I can set them up in our garage for spray basting. Either way it is a lot of work. Your solution sounds good.

  7. What a great quilt! My daughter's first email address when she was 11 years old was "mynailsarewet@aol.com". I made her a single enlarged nail polish for her annual birthday card this year and she loved it. I don't dare show her you quit or she'll make me make it for her! She's 31 years old now, by the way, and her Instagram site has to do with her incredibly decorated and fun fingernails!

  8. I have gotten to the point that i make my quilts in sections so that they fit on my tables for basting and are also easier to move through my machine as i have shoulder issues. i quilt up to about a half inch from the edges that go together and then sew the front pieces together and fold over the edges of the back seams and hand sew them. more hand sewing but a lot less painful on my body to sandwich and quilt this way.

  9. Such a fun quilt! I have some one quilt my projects, so I've not had to deal with laying one out for basting. But I do have problems finding a space in the house to lay out the larger quilts to measure for borders. I finally rearranged the living room furniture so there is room for my larger quilts (don't tell my family that, they think I was just tired of the old configuration).
