It was in with Grandma's jewelry and my first thought was "lipstick holder" but it's way too wide for one tube and way too skinny for more than one.
So what does that leave? It's only an inch deep, which rules out holding most things I can think of. It's monogrammed, and her initials are unusual enough that I'm sure it was originally hers.

You don't say what the diameter is but it looks like my mom's lipstick holders. Lipstick tubes were larger than they are today.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a lipstick holder, the lipstick were larger many years ago. It is lovely, a treasure.
ReplyDeleteI don't *know* what it is, but from the dimensions you describe, it sounds like it would be a perfect place to put rings when they're not being worn.
ReplyDeletecandle holder?
ReplyDeleteMy guess is it held rings and pins that were worn on everything. I have an old lipstick holder, and it is much smaller around that that appears to be. It's pretty nevertheless.
ReplyDeleteCould it be a thimble?

The container would appear to have a padded base, could it have been used to hold hatpins which were an integral part of my lady's wardrobe?
ReplyDeleteMy granny had one similar to this. It was a set of 3 or 4 that set on her dresser top mirror. It held lipstick, a small comb and some stuff like that. Not all lipstick holders were made to carry. Some just sat on dressers.
ReplyDeletehttp://thelazypeacock.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html. Here's a link to what my granny's looked like. Except all the little holders had her initials on them.
