There were two yarn shops within easy walking distance of our old house, not to mention Michaels and Hancocks and -- if I really wanted to stretch my legs and live a bit dangerously -- Joann's and a really nice quilt shop.
Since we moved an hour away, both of the yarn shops have closed. Joann's moved closer to the house (it's probably a good thing that I don't have them three blocks from home, along my morning walk!) and Michaels moved to the next town over, so far out of my way that I rarely make the drive.
I never spent much time in either of the yarn shops. Except for inexpensive acrylic for the baby hats, I haven't bought much yarn in the past few years, so I haven't missed them at all. I always figured that if I really needed to yarn shop, I'd make the drive up to Woodland Woolworks -- except they've closed too.
There's a new shop in Salem and I was all set to check it out -- then I read the bottom of their sign. "Fine yarn studio?" Nope, not for me. I didn't need anything, and I'm at the point where drooling over yarn that's out of my price range doesn't appeal to me anymore.
This week, I finally stopped in because I wanted some new double points to cast on another pair for the pooling sock yarn challenge and the craft stores were out of size 2. To my surprise, they were nicer and more helpful than either of the other two stores had ever been. I'll probably be back, if only to get another look at the old wringer washer full of dishcloth cotton!

I was looking at both of your reports and decided to be thankful that quilts don't take as much yardage as knitting projects do.
ReplyDeleteI just learned to knit this last year...glad I don't do a yarn busting report too.
ReplyDeleteWe have only one "yarn" shop here besides the big box places and the lady was so snobby I just turned and walked out. Thank goodness for on-line shopping LOL.
ReplyDeleteCrispy
Those are good numbers - you're already half way to my goal - wish I could say the same. I could have written Crispy's comment but I won't. Maybe she was having a bad day.
