waited too long

This little Happy Jack quilt sat kitted up in my sewing room for years. Mom and a friend got together and made it for themselves and then gave me the pattern, along with the pre-cut squares to make my own. They even packaged it up in a pretty black box with a picture of the quilt on the top.

At that point, I was absolutely in love with the project and had every intention of making the quilt. I carefully tucked it away in the sewing room, fully intending to have it finished by the next Halloween.

Years passed, along with my usual cycle of "can't find it...found it, but it's three days after Halloween...lost it again....found it but don't wait to work on it right now..."

I found it again during my great sewing room excavation and brought it downstairs, fully intending to have it done by Halloween. Then I opened the box and took a good, hard look at it. This isn't my type of quilt. The pieces are huge.

So what do you do with a project like that -- put it away for next Halloween quilting season? Try to foist it off on someone else who might want to make it? I briefly thought of giving it to Teenage Daughter, but I don't think she sews with pieces this big, either...

Seems like a lot of stressing over a project that only took a day to make, doesn't it?

  1. I have found myself in the same situation before. I have "re-purposed" fabric from kits before. And I must admit, I ended up much happier with the project.

  2. I am not into making stuff for occasions such as this. I don't even get into the Christmas decorations...my daughter is though, so maybe I should think of her.

  3. You can always use it for a giveaway! I've done that with things I "grew out of" before - and there's always folks excited about what you're giving away! That's a really cute top, by the way!!

  5. Sometimes I repurpose kitted fabric...sometimes I put it back to see if at a later date, it tweaks my fancy. Sometimes I just offer it up for a loving home. But gracious -- poor little Happy Jack -- he's SO darling!!! He makes me smile. :)

  6. I think it is darling and I would be glad to take it off of your hands. I am a Halloween lover and the kids would love seeing Mr. Jack.

  7. I have neglected projects before....just because you are bored or intimidated. I made a lace blouse once, but got bored before the last sleeve was on. It sat for six months on a hanger in my sewing studio until my husband said he really needed the shirt. It took an entire hour to finish.

  9. It is hilarious with that big toothy grin! Just put it up on the front door with thumbtacks to welcome your trick or treaters! Or give it to the elementary school for their decorations?

  10. Or how about a gift for a teacher? You can never give them enough apples for all the work they do.
